A new report has been published by the SGH Think Tank for Healthcare, exploring the challenges surrounding the establishment of the European Health Data Space (EHDS). The EHDS aims to make health data accessible across EU countries to enhance the quality of healthcare services, accelerate the development of pharmaceutical and technological innovations, and improve the effectiveness of health policies.
The publication highlights the current challenges, including the objectives of the initiative, data quality, interoperability, and cybersecurity.
Artur Piechocki and Katarzyna Gorzkowska focus on key areas such as:
- EU data flow regulations: the European Union is introducing initiatives like the EHDS regulation to streamline the cross-border flow of health data between member states. For Poland, adapting to these regulations is essential for effectively managing both personal and non-personal data;
- the significance of health data: health data is crucial for the medical and pharmaceutical industries, especially in the development of new medicines and in shaping national health policies. The EHDS regulation supports the primary and secondary use of health data, enhancing its availability and quality;
- the role of technology in healthcare: emerging technologies like AI and IoT are increasingly being adopted in the healthcare sector. However, regulatory frameworks for data management and quality assurance are still evolving, which has implications for the security of data processing;
- AI Act and data governance: the EU’s AI Act sets out requirements for the quality of data used in AI systems, particularly in high-risk sectors like healthcare. Ensuring compliance with these regulations and safeguarding data security is of utmost importance.
